October is Cybersecurity Month

October is Cybersecurity Month

Here are some tips to help keep you safe online.

Access Communications wants to help you keep your online accounts and personal information safe. Passwords are the first line of defense from cyberattacks. However, weak, or easily guessable passwords can make you vulnerable to hacking attempts. Here are some password best practices to follow for better cybersecurity.

Use Strong Passwords
A strong password should be at least 12 characters long and include a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using common words or phrases, as they are easy to guess. Instead, use a combination of random words or phrases that are easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess.

Use Unique Passwords
Avoid using the same password across multiple accounts. If one account gets hacked, all other accounts with the same password will also be compromised. Use a unique password for each account and consider using a password manager to store and manage your passwords securely.

Change Your Passwords Regularly
Regularly changing your passwords can help prevent unauthorized access to your accounts. Set a reminder to change your passwords every three to six months or more frequently if you suspect any suspicious activity on your account.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring a second verification form, such as a code sent to your phone or a fingerprint scan. Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible to protect your accounts from hacking attempts.

Be Wary of Phishing Scams
Phishing scams are a common tactic hackers use to trick users into revealing their passwords. Be wary of emails or messages that ask you to reset your password or provide personal information. Always verify the legitimacy of the request before providing any information.

Check your email address or username for previous data breaches.
External tools such as "
Have I Been Pwned" allow you to check if your email address or username has been compromised in previous data breaches. It alerts you to potential vulnerabilities and advises you to take appropriate actions, such as changing compromised passwords.

Following these password best practices can significantly improve your cybersecurity and protect your accounts from hacking attempts. Always use strong and unique passwords, change them regularly, enable two-factor authentication, and be cautious of phishing scams. Stay safe online!
